We have a radical History
Founded in 1871 to champion freedom of the individual, equality of opportunity and a re-distribution of wealth by means of social and political reform. The introduction of old age pensions, national insurance, employment centres and local planning were just some of the Liberal Party's lasting achievements while it was in government. William Beveridge, a Liberal was responsible for drawing up plans for the National Health Service.
…. And a radical future
The merger of the Liberal and Social Democrats in 1988 left a small group of independent minded Liberals. From that regrouping we have grown to become the fourth party in England with many councillors in places as different in character as from Rural Cornwall to busy Merseyside. Liberals are unique in politics. We value our independence. We were prepared to go out into the political cold rather than sell our principles. Now, at a time when all three of the established parties drift into an American-style conservative consensus, an opportunity opens up for a genuinely liberal alternative.
